In relation to my own history, I wanted to focus on the subculture of the Juggalos, who are a devoted fanbase of the Insane Clown Posse (ICP) and members of their music label Psychopathic Records. This image embraces the unnatural and exaggerated characteristics of the Juggalo subculture who are often stereotyped as being violent, undereducated, poor, racist, crime-committing youth by people on the outside. Juggalos are a collective of people from all cultures and backgrounds who feel like outcasts from mainstream society. They are often recognized by distinctive visual cues such as clown face paint, clothing, tattoos, and merchandise featuring the ICP logo, the Hatchetman. They form tight knit communities built around shared values, passions or struggles giving people a place to belong to when other social environments reject them. This photo from 2011 was taken in the line of an ICP concert. This is the third in my five painting series, While it feels like a lifetime ago, it was a very definitive time in my life and these are the people who supported me. The background also features the Flower of Life, again emphasizing the phases and interconnectedness of my personal life.
